Rust

Rust

Rust is a general-purpose programming language which emphasizes performance, type safety, concurrency, and memory safety.

Rust was influenced by ideas from functional programming, including immutability, higher-order functions, algebraic data types, and pattern matching.

A software developer named Graydon Hoare created Rust in 2006 while working at Mozilla. Rust 1.0, the first stable release, was published in May 2015.

History

2006-2009: Early years

Rust began as a personal project by Mozilla employee Graydon Hoare. He started the project due to his frustration with a broken elevator in his apartment building whose software had crashed.

During the early years, the Rust compiler was written in around 38,000 lines of OCaml, an "industrial-strength" functional programming language.

2009-2012: Mozilla Sponsorship

Mozilla officially sponsored Rust in 2009. Executives placed engineers on the project including Patrick Walton, Niko Matsakis, Felix Klock, and Manish Goregaokar.

During this period, work shifted away from the initial OCaml compiler, to a compiler written in Rust itself.

2012-2015: Evolution

During this time, Rust replaced its garbage collector with the ownership system and removed unnecessary extra features.

Rust 1.0 was officially released in May 2015.

2015-2020: Servo and Early Adoption

Rust and the Servo browser engine were developed together, influencing each other's features.

Firefox began using Rust code, and companies like Samsung, Facebook, Dropbox, and AWS adopted Rust for performance and safety benefits.

2020-Present: Mozilla Layoffs and Rust Foundation

Mozilla layoffs in 2020 led to concerns about Rust's future.

The Rust Foundation was created in 2021 with backing from major tech companies.

Rust faced community controversies, including leadership disputes and backlash over trademark policy changes.

Example Code

Here is a simple piece of code in Rust that prints "Hello, world!" to the console.

fn main() {
    println!("Hello, world!");
}
