Haskell

Haskell is a general-purpose, statically-typed, functional programming language. It has many implementations, although its main one is the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC).

History

After Research Software Ltd. released Miranda in 1985, interest in functional languages grew significantly. Although, Miranda was proprietary software, and at a conference in Portland, in the United States, there was a strong want for an open standard for these languages, and they wanted to consolidate existing functional languages into a common one to serve as a basis.

Haskell was developed by a committee. The first version of Haskell, Haskell 1.0, was defined in 1990.

In 1997, Haskell 98 was thought up, with a purpose to specify a stable, minimal, portable version of Haskell and a standard library, along with support for future extensions.

In 2006, a successor to the Haskell 98 standard began. It was named Haskell 2010, and announced in November 2009 and published in July 2010.

Example Code

module Main (main) where

main :: IO ()
main = putStrLn "Hello, world!"
